Many people consider this Elton Johns masterpiece album. It is very good, and has many excellent and classic songs on it. Sonically, it sounds great, and as the number of reviews indicates, this is Elton Johns most popular album. It easily has more than double the average number of reviews of his other 70s era albums. Back in the day this was a double vinyl album of 17 tracks, and there are only two weak songs on the whole thing. But, because of that, it ends up #2 on my classic era 1970s Elton John list, just behind the excellent Tumbleweed Connection (which has no weak songs).

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is one of the most classic rock albums of the 1970s, and is an album everyone needs to own because it is packed with great music. This was one of the first Elton John albums I was exposed to after previously only owning his greatest hits album. Boy, was I ever impressed the first time I heard the opening track Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, with its slow atmospheric beginning to its hard rockin and fast paced mid-section. This song is just awesome and really sets the bar high for the rest of the album to try and match. There are so many great songs on this that hardly if ever got any radio airplay. From "Ive Seen that Movie Too" to "All the Young Girls Love Alice". It doesnt matter if you are an Elton John fan or not, every fan of classic rock and quality music from the 70s needs to have this one. Its an absolute 5 star album.

When Elton John released his double album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in 1973, he and lyricist Bernie Taupin were at the peak of their songwriting collaboration. While "Levon," "Rocket Man," "Honky Cat," "Daniel," "Tiny Dancer," and "Dont Let the Sun Go Down on Me" are truly great songs, few fans would disagree that this is Johns best album. Recorded at the Chteau dHrouville (where John also recorded Honky Chateau in 1972 and Dont Shoot Me Im Only the Piano Player in 1973), it features the Number 1 radio hit "Bennie and the Jets," along with the meticulously crafted, 11-minute "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Candle in the Wind," "Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting," "Harmony," and "Grey Seal." It is also one of the best song-sequenced albums of all times (especially evident in its original vinyl LP format. For instance, Side One of the first LP included "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding," "Candle in the Wind," and "Bennie and the Jets.") On the album, Elton John is backed Dee Murray on bass and backing vocals, Davey Johnstone on electric guitar and backing vocals, Nigel Olsson on drums and backing vocals, and David Hentschel on A.R.P. synthesizer. It is perhaps now common knowledge that John wrote "Funeral for a Friend" as the kind of instrumental he would like performed at his own funeral, and "Candle in the Wind" as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. (Taupin first heard the phrase "candle in the wind" used in reference to Janis Joplin.) Is "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" a masterpiece of rock or just the finest album of glamorama ever recorded? The latter. You can have your gold bricks and rock too, but only if theres dirt beneath the gold--and there are only sprinklings of soil beneath the bricks on this record. "Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting" sustains its illusion so well that one might almost buy into it, but, like the album itself, anyone not looking specifically to lose themselves in a glittering fantasy will look into that illusion and see nothing but empty space. Which is alright, for the most part, since Johns melodies are so pleasant and Taupins lyrics so smooth-going. What scares me is when people buy into the illusion and forget that rock was and is meant for something deeper and more urgent. Only in the dazzling "Bennie and the Jets" did I sense enough truth to lose myself.

Ive always regarded this as Eltons best and I also think it has aged better than Yellow Brick Road. On this album, Elton had just come into his full creative powers as a songwriter and the album is near perfect. Elton was not especially regarded as a great singer up to this album and at this point, he started regularly writing great songs that were perfect for his voice. The two hits-"Daniel" and "Crocadile Rock"-are a little overplayed but within the context of the strong album material, I continue to include them on my MP3 player and I like listening to the album as a whole. I would even venture to say that "Teacher, I need you", "Eldeberry Wine", "Midnight Creeper" and "Blues for Baby and me" are some of my favorite Elton John songs.

After "Honky Chateau" became Eltons first album to top the charts, he continued on with this next release in a still more commercial direction. This album gets mixed reviews from John fans. Fans of Johns older material cried sell out, as Elton continued to gain more and more commercial success, while this and the previous album gained Elton a whole new following of fans at the same time. For me "Piano Player" is a solid album and although not Eltons best, it is mostly quite good. Of the two hit singles I like "Daniel" a lot better than "Crocodile Rock" which never really clicked with me. Of the album tracks there are several good to great ones including "Teacher I Need You" (which pre-dated Van Halens "Hot For Teacher" by about a decade), the funky pop rock of "Elderberry Wine", "Blues For My Baby And Me", the epic "Have Mercy On The Criminal" which is my favorite song on the disc, and the album closer "High Flying Bird". Elton was on a commercial role at this time and "Dont Shoot Me" remains one of his classics.

This album includes a number of Eltons 45s that my mother and uncle listened to as kids. Good sound and quality. This is still early in Eltons career and it is interesting to see how much different he sounds in this album from more recent albums. Elton John fans should have this album.

Since most of us can sing this soundtrack of our youth word-for-word in its entirety, and since others here have detailed the songs with much more detail and authority than I can, Ill just stick to the SHM sound quality. (Thats what many of you who are thinking of repurchasing the CD are probably wondering about anyway.)

I own a few of these CDs and am a big fan of them. The sound is crisp and clear, and theres a lot of air in the reproduction. Its true that they are pricey, but to me, its worth the few extra dollars. I dont think you will be blown away by the technology, but if clean sound and subtle nuances are important to you, then I think youll be satisfied with this CD. I certainly am.

Named for a cut that originally appeared on his Tumbleweed Connection album, Madman Across the Water yielded some of Elton Johns earliest AOR staples. "Tiny Dancer," like the previous "Your Song," was introduced and carried by Johns masterful piano composition. The songs sense of longing also employed the falsetto chorus that would become as much of a trademark as his costumes. "Levon," another entry into the John/Taupin "ballad of" category, is one of their finest pieces. The orchestration gives the song not only its sense of foreboding, but also its release of tension as the song ends. "Rotten Peaches" became a favorite, as did "Holiday Inn." The best three songs from this nine song collection are on the box set. Strip away those three and the rest of "Madman" ranges from album cuts that do no damage to rotten exercises in filler. Were I to pluck a fourth track for the box set it would probably be the album closer, "Goodbye".

Thats not to say that the box set snaps up all desirable Elton John tracks. "Tumbleweed Connection" is an excellent album, much more consistent than this one, and is woefully underrepresented considering that the box is a 4CD set. And once you have the three choice cuts from "Madman" via the box set, the single album live set "11-17-70" would be a much stronger addition to your collection for this time period in Eltons career. That album of Elton raucously burning down the house back in his nightclub days is entirely unrepresented on the box set.

One gets the impression that after this album Elton, with or without the discreet advice of label execs, decided that hed taken the singer-songwriter path about as far as he could. He wisely foresaw that the singer-songwriter fad would be running out of steam in the next year or so, and with his next album "Honky Chateau" he steered a course toward pop. Like "Madman", that album also was somewhat hit or miss, and its three best songs are also on the box set. This was a transitional time in Eltons career as he laid the groundwork for delivering some of the best pop singles and albums of the early-to-mid-70s.

The standout track on this album for me is the incomparable "Levon". This track alone is worth buying the entire CD for - because it so powerfully complements the rest of the CD. "Levon" manages to be a brightly orchestrated, upbeat sounding pop song that is absolutely haunting after a good listen. This is a complex, intricate song with amazing strings and percussion, topped with Eltons driving piano and a slightly understated vocal, if anything Elton ever sings could be called understated. Bernies lyrics give "Levon" its edge, and they create the perfect level of tension and foreboding in this song. A most unique, and at the time, quite daring song.

The rest of the CD is excellent as well, especially the title track, "Razorface" and the overplayed and now somewhat irritating "Tiny Dancer", which still takes me back over 30 years when I hear it. The best thing for this song as far as Im concerned is that I harly ever listen to FM radio any longer, so when I put the CD on, TD sounds fresh again. "Indian Sunset" is another tension filled, occasionally haunting song, with a deeper message than the pop styling of the music might suggest. The last few songs tend to not do much for me, although I do like "All the Nasties", with that one and only Elton John piano line. This is a classic album from an artist who would go on to have every bit as great an influence on pop, rock and British Invasion music as anyone ever has.

Two words should do it: Classic Elton. But Im a man of many words, so... The first album I ever bought - back when there was ONLY vinyl - was Eltons Honky Chateau. That started a love affair that I thought would never end. Unfortunately, it ended 15 or more years ago when Elton seemed to stop trying, but everything up to and including "Reg Strikes Back" has amazed me. As for this disc, theres a reason that "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon" still get constant radio play - they are totally awesome. But my favorite track is the title cut, a haunting song that Elton delivers with a passion I miss, but fortunately preserved for all time. Now remastered, it stands the test of time. "Goodbye Yellow Brick" may be Eltons career-defining disc, but this disc, although more raw, is a worthy addition to anyone who has even the slightest interest in the Great Sir Elton.

Elton Johns earlier albums are my favorites that he made. Though some of his later ones are okay, I found the older ones are the ones I like the most from start to finish. If I had to pick the albums, Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water are two at the very top.

Madman starts off with three of 4 songs that are some of his best (well known may be a better statement, though they are great spongs), Tiny Dancer, Levon and Madman Across The Water.

But the lesser known songs are also great, there are nods to the country stylish sounds of Tumbleweed but this record is more rocky/blusish. Razor Face, Holiday Inn and Rotten Peaches, with its infectious "big" chorus, and will capture you just as much as the other sounds. Probably the most TUnbleweedish song on the record.

Just a great record to have in your collection, though pretty much each record upto Captain Fantastic is worthwhile.

This is one of Eltons masterpieces. The combination of Eltons compositions, Bernies lyrics, and Paul Buckmasters well crafted arrangements make this an essential purchase for any Elton John fan. Much has already been said about "Levon" and "Tiny Dancer" (and Pauls efforts stand out on those two tracks) but two gems that deserve more attention are "Holiday Inn" and "Indian Sunset". "Holiday Inn has some nifty sitar on it, and "Indian Sunset" is one of Bernies most intense lyrics of that era.

A side note here regarding Steve Gdulas review of this album: Although "Madman Across the Water" was first recorded at the time of the TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION sessions, (this was version #1) it was NOT included on that album for its original vinyl release. In fact, that version did not even see the light of day until Elton put out the "Rare Masters" 2CD set in 1992. However, the track has been included on subsequent reissues of Tumbleweed Connection in 1995 and 2008. (Which may be the reason Steve thought it was on the original LP release). The title track of the Madman Across The Water LP released in 1971 is actually the 2nd version recorded.

The concert on the first disc is ok. Especially since they didnt rehearse first. The second disc is absolutely horrible. I understand the show taping was over 40 years ago, but the quality of it is horrible. I do recommend this DVD for the die hard Who fan, but for anyone else its a waste.

Watched this the other night and had an ear to ear smile the whole time. I am biased of course, Ive been a huge fan for 30 odd years. Many of the die hards are nit-picking about sound and sloppiness etc. What a load of nonsense.

I watched this on my Sony 55"... up very close , Harmon Kardon 5.1 etc. blah blah....and I felt like I was there... watching the greatest live band of all time. It was brilliant!

No...its not perfect but its the last time they ever played with Moony and that alone... is worth the price of admission. However what you have here is The Who in all theyre glory playing a Greatest Hits package of songs in full maniacle mode.

Daltry, the serious, businesslike frontman belting out the numbers, the last we would see of his full Tommy mane forever.

Townshend, windmilling, scissor kicking, duckwalking, goofballing and often being a complete jerk.

Entwhistle playing his thundering bass like no-one before or after. Looking somewhat bored as always, occasionally smiling , killer outfit, again as usual.

And Moon, in full loon mode, so full of energy and life despite the fact that he was slowly killing himself.

Even if your not a fan, I guarantee that you will know all the songs even if you thought not beforehand. The sound and video are top shelf and the performance is incredible.

This DVD is exactly what we need more of. The Who from the "classic" era. So much video material has been released from the recent Who tours (99 Vegas, 00 Albert Hall, 02 Boston, 06-07 Encore Series), a performance from the archives is more than welcome. This concert may be a bit less polished than the 1970 "Isle of Wight" DVD (which has been available for several years now), but nevertheless it is The Who as nature intended. I was born too late to experience this energy first-hand, and while I did see The Who in 2006, nothing compares to the energy and power that the original Who delivered. We will never see that again. If you were there, buy this for the memories. If you werent, buy this for a glimpse of what you missed.

PS - I know there is more in the vaults. Will someone PLEASE get that stuff out? This is The Who in their prime.

THIS IS THE WHO AT THEIR BEST AND UP-CLOSE AND PERSONAL!!! PLUS, YOU GET A BONUS PERFORMANCE OF "TOMMY" THEIR FAMOUS ROCK OPERA. You get the legendary line-up of Roger Daltry, Pete Townsend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. These 2 concerts show the Who in a somewhat informal setting, they talk to each other on stage, and you get a very close-up view.

This double disc dvd contains over 20 of their biggest hits, and over 3 hours of great music. Im not really a "WHO" fan, but I have always enjoyed their music. I bought this to see what all the "fuss" was about, and I really, really liked it. This is an excellent 2 disc, 2 concert dvd, with a bonus performance of "Tommy", their famous Rock Opera.

This is some great "stuff", so I highly recommend it!!!

I have seen them live and they got busy, but this DVD doesnt compare to what I have seen. George Clinton is really high in this concert and it is affecting his performance. Plus, One Nation Under A Groove(One of my personal favs) wasnt on this. No offense to George, but I was not interested in seeing his granddaughter rap. She was good, but I wanted to see funk, not rap. P-Funk should have put a better DVD out.

I have given this dvd to at least a dozen friends and neighbors at Christmas. I have watched it at least 100 times. If youre chilling with your favorite drink or whatever this concert takes you away from it all. I was stoked to see the bonus songs section was like another show. It is the 1st 5 songs before what is the main show and 1 song played at the end. The only thing that I didnt like is that Cosmic Slop wasnt played. That is my favorite song ever. Some others were not played either. I saw them first in Myrtle Beach then in Shreveport. I cant wait to see them again! I own the older concert as well and get funky to both. I strongly recommend this to everyone.

This DVD shows true musical skills and creativity. George Clinton shows that he has conquered the test of time. He integrated new members, one with a violin, his grandaughter, old members into his famous hits and blew my mind! His change of tempo on his classics, such as Knee Deep was that of a master. It captured me and educated me on how the art of true music is lost with todays hip-hop, sampling, no true musical talented generation. Im 50 years young and Im grateful to obtain a wonderful DVD of one of the greatest of all time. Only he and Prince are still doing it.

This DVD is fantastic! My only complaint would be that its not a 2-DVD set. I loved it that much. I had a smile on my face the whole concert. Theyre currently on tour so my hopes are high for additional DVDs. If youre a WAR fan ..... get this DVD. You wont be disappointed.

Once again this is not the real band. Theres a group out there in the music land thats called Lowrider Band. There videos on Youtube is much better than this one that is being pond off as War Live Show. The quality was very good, but the photography was not very creative. It could have used better stage lighting. And once again it did not have the magic that one would expect of a group that has been around for nearly 40 years, but I doubt very much any of those guys come from the Old School except for Mr. Lonnie Jordan. They can loose those old time back drops. Its not 1976 for God sakes its 2009...go figure?

I WAS WORRIED THAT THIS WOULD BE BAD. Usually "Greatest Hits" live albums contain bad, short versions of the hits. The studio versions are typically better. But, the songs are all stretched out and played in new and interesting ways.

I WAS WORRIED THAT THE BAND WOULD BE LAME. The only original member of the band was Lonnie Jordan. Only one other member of the group, Sal Rodriguez, had been with the band more than 10 years. I thought that this would either be like a tribute band, or that the musicians would not really be into the songs. In groups like this, with only one orginal member, the backup guys dont really sound like belong in the band and just throw in solos here and there. But, in this case, the band sounds very cohesive.

It is a concert video, so it includes all of the chit chat. That isnt good for a CD, but I think it is appropriate for DVD where you want to get a feel for the concert. It is kind of embarrassing to see the audience, and then have the less than attractive women come up on stage and dance. But, this is a 40 year old band with 60 year old fans.

The filming and editing of the concert was very well done. It was not like many of the videos today where the camera is always zooming in and out, with all the quick cuts.

The audio quality is also very good. The one thing I dont like is that when you play the concert in 5.1 sound the audience is too loud. Also, if you do track selection, you can not choose select the audio setup (stereo or 5.1).

There arent any bonus features.

These batteries are ok - I constantly need AAAs for my universal remote that has special lights, so I go through a lot of these. They do not last as long as the name brands but they are also a lot cheaper with free shipping so thats why Ive been buying them. However, since I go through so many of these, Ive deciced to invest in rechargeable batteries. Not to mention the hazardous waste that I will reduce with that!

Bulk purchasing these aaas are usually a matter of a good search and then buy the cheapest lot at the moment. These Samsung batteries, in this configuration, have been my choice many times just because the price is often right. Per one of the negative comments - yes this came in a box labelled "Pleomax" however it also says that Pleomax is part of Samsung, so it looks to me like a branding change on Samsungs part, not a bait-and-switch by the seller.

I read in Consumer Reports a while ago that in their testing, generic alkaline batteries are the same or nearly the same as the "big brands" so Ive been buying whatever is the cheapest for years with no regrets. These seem just fine - my flashlight shines as bright as ever, gadgets seem to last as long as usual. Given the great price I am a satisfied customer.

These are being used in a couple of electronic toys of my little ones, remote controls, and a very small flashlight. Theyre a good price and battery life has been reasonable. Cant tell these apart from the more expensive brands.

I got these knowing the bulbs were useless and intending
to replace them with LEDs. Once this is done, the lights
are acceptably bright and last reasonably long with four
AA cells. According to my calculations, the battery life
should be about 25 times greater with the LEDs.

Why the vendor has been unable to figure this out is beyond me.

Im not sure what everyone is crying about. I use my Stick Up Bulb out in the shed. Once, when the power went out, I went out to the shed and retreived my Stick Up Bulb and put it in our bedroom. The battery lasted about 3 hours before the light faded out. bighter than a candle, but not as bright as a regular 25 Watt bulb still, for the price its not a bad product. Ive never had any issues with the bulb burning out that others talk about.

I bought two of these and put them both in closets. I have an older apartment that has no lighting in any closets or hallways. I find that one of them works great, however the other burned out within two days. I would still highly recomend this product, as the one works great!

Work great in my house, in my truck and outside on my Patio and by my BBQ. I even have a few extra velco pads up for moving them around.

These lights work fine for what they are. The double-sticky velcro makes them easy to put where you want them. The light is not as bright as Id hoped but it does the job illuminating dark closets, which is what I bought them for.

The one major flaw is that it has two brightness modes each tap rotates through bright -> dim -> off, so it takes two taps to turn it off. Trouble is, dim is really not any dimmer than bright, so its not that useful, and twice already ive tapped it on the way out thinking I was turning it off, but instead turning it to not-so-dim, and ended up draining the batteries because it stayed on for days. Would have been better if it was just a simple on-off.

I bought six of these and am happy to say they work very well. Nice if an standard electrical connection is not practical. The swivel is a plus.

I was also hesitant about buying these, but they do work great and are a big help looking for stuff under the sink in particular. I used the swivel lights on my computer desk for those little areas that are always dark. Theyre worth the money, and if you decide to buy batteries for these, youll probably want to get velcro to replace the 2-sided tape since it doesnt hold up that well once youve taken it off.

I bought these in a fit of pique because I had a fuse box that is in one of the most inconvenient places imaginable and even in daylight is impossible to see. Ive placed one of these in the box for future use. Ive also put them in dark drawers and under shelves.

While the light is not very strong it is a good light source for general purposes. Also it makes an excellent light for a jack-o-lantern without fear of setting the house on fire. Im going to try placing some around house plants for atmospheric lighting as well. One package may not be enough.

These were great for about 4 months. Then the adhesive fails and you find them fallen off with the batteries depleted. I had mine mounted upside down. Probably would work better on vertical sufaces. I plan to use a better adhesive. Magnets have to align and come fairly close to light. Otherwise great product.

These are great little lights that provide a big amount of light. They are to be used in an area that doesnt require constant light. But read the fine print - the magnet is supposed to stay near the power source. Dont throw them away.

These are great products. I have them in a corner lazy-susan in my kitchen, linen closets and drawers in the utility room and bath. You put the light in the door frame or cabinet and the magnet on the door. The trick is lining them up so the magnet is in close proximity to the light when the door or drawer is closed. This turns off the light. Open the door, light comes on as the magnet is moved away from the light. Test (in a dark room) to make sure the light goes off when the door is closed or you will wear out the battery. Once you install one, its a snap.

Ok, maybe I just didnt read into the product enough, but I thought they would be push to turn on lights. There is a magnet, and I really cant figure out a good way to use the magnet... how make it work with a cabinet, because the light and magnet need to touch, and it just wouldnt work. It does put off a good amount of light, Ill give you that. But I find it impractical, and I would not have bought it if I knew how it would work.

I bought a set of these last spring and love them. I have them inside a couple of my kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanity cabinets and linen closet. I have a swivel light in my clothes closet although it doesnt seem as bright as the Quik Brite lights. A couple times I have left it on by mistake. All in all, they work great and are welcome during a power outage. They are very handy. One note: Since the mounting adhesives are not reusable, I bought additional stick mount adhesive strips from the home improvement store to use when I decide to reposition or move them to another location.

First off, I like to say the first time saw the Connections series I was hooked. When Connections 2 & 3 came out I had to watch them as well as the series The Day the Universe Changed. James Burke really knows how to make history interesting. He made connections you wouldnt see or even think about. Wish he made more of this kind of stuff cant get enough if it.

OK, now a word of warning. These great series are now public domain people are starting to put together copies of their own disks and selling them. These copies may not be of good quality and may even be duplicates of the disks made by Ambruse Video. If you see a new seller or just listed with a price less than $80 it is probably one of these copies and I dont recommend buying them.

Science and history made fascinating

Connections 2 is not a repeat of the original, although it does cover some of the same ground, taking some of the same items and connecting them in new ways to new final outcomes. Using some of the same points does mean that some information is repeated between the two seasons, but if you never saw the first season, youd be just as fascinated. James Burke has a way of making boring science and history very interesting. He begins season one by placing an object on the table and saying, "You dont know what this is, but you want to," and instantly, you do. This way of drawing you in continues through the series. There arent as many episodes as in season one and season three has even less. This is the only thing bad I say about this series, its not long enough to tell all the fascinating stories that James has to tell.

Where is "The Real Thing" ?

This is an excellent series, as are all of James Burkes series. But .... WHERE IS "THE REAL THING"? I had the misfortune of thinking this was some kind of show about Coca Cola when I first noticed it in the TV listings in the paper back in the 70s. I finally checked it out when it only had about 3 episodes left and here was this guy talking about time perception on a set that looked like a Salvador Dali painting.
The next episode was about language perception and had some professional theater people. One would read a script as fast as he possibly could and a second would try to repeat it only by listening. The results were amazing.

In the Connections Series, James tries to trace a series of past events that he claims are ultimately responsible for todays technological advances and conditions. I was referred to this series from a review about Bill Brysons "A Short History of Nearly Everything." (I highly recommend Bill Brysons book).

Made in the late 1970s, this series has turned out to be very disappointing for me. The material is presented in a dense and non-interesting way... Its like watching a series with old Star Trek acting but without the old Star Trek charms and messages...

Even more important, trying to trace the causation of anything requires a true expert. Anyone can trace and path a path in a web of causations and claim a revelation (hence the existence of so many conspiracy theories!). A true guide can trace the important and less revealed paths and take you on a insightful and revealing journey. Unfortunately, James is no such a guide.

I went looking for a dvd holder to hold are ever going movie/xbox game/baby movie collection. When I went back on to buy it I baught this one instead of the smaller one even though it says dvd/cd holder it does not hold the outer dvd covers and if you try to put the inserts or booklets from games in it it gets to stuffed even and wont close. witch only leaves the option of discs only with defeates the purpose of the dvd part of the holder. Even then with just the discs the cds easily fall out. The only reason why I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 is because it is of good quality and if you are just wanting to store a few cds it would work for the prize but there are much better ones out there to buy.

I know these get a bit pricy, but like everyone else, when your house is OVERFLOWING with those jewel cases and/or DVD boxes you have to do SOMETHING. (Cheaper books often have pockets w/ backing that scratches the discs!) While CD-sized, they are tall enough to fold a DVD insert into the pouch. Also, at the top of each page (one disc pocket on each side of the page) is a little strip-size pocket where you can put in a nice typed label so youll always know what disc has been removed. These look AWESOME on a bookcase. Ive got about 6 on mine. Unlike the books that zip closed which you really cannot display anywhere. And, as you can imagine, it is EASY to find the disc youre looking for, use it, and put it back again. (Pages are easy to turn w/out the discs falling out.) And they really DO look leather-bound. The spine covering is soft to the touch, with a little bit of gloss, but not SHINY like plastic or vynl. The cover is "pebbled", but again, no tell-tale signs that it is "cheap". The pages are black (not the traditional white), so it looks elegant inside and out. So whether you use them for CDs or software or home movies or the CDs w/ you vacation photos, you once again have a NICE looking way to keep your favorite stuff on display. :)

Just what I was looking for. We already had 2 DVD shelving systems filled to bust and were not about to buy a 3rd. These really are a near perfect solution. They are the exact height of a standard DVD case and really do look awesome on our shelves. I looked at everything I could find out there and most of it either had the standard caselogic feel or was too bulky/tall to fit on our shelves. They only seem to have 2 extremely minor drawbacks.
1) They only seem to come in black (brown would have fit our decor better) and color variety would help with organization (i.e. Blue for Disney Red for Christmas ect.)

Yay! I am a movie buff and have a huge collection of DVDs. However, I do not have all the shelves needed to store these bad boys. This case is great to consolidate my DVDs and is makes them more accessable. Plus, it looks great on my bookshelf. It also is great storage for all the CDs I have accumilated over the years. I had them in boxes never to be looked at again mainly due to my iPod. So now they too are consolidated and look better than the bulky Case Logic cases.

We have tons of home movies that weve burned on to DVD. The storage binders are the perfect fit to store our home movies.

We like it because:
-Its classy
-It takes up less shelf space than if we had jewel cases for the DVDs
-It makes it easy to transport our movies
-It looks soooo much better on the shelf than a bunch of jewel cases and multiple binders make it look even better

We filled it up pretty quickly. Id recommend using it to store the DVDs only and store separately the chapter index card that came with the movie.

I thought a knew what I was getting when I ordered this product, just another cheap storage binder. I go through these things almost weekly it seems. So I figured I would go out of my comfort zone and buy something more than five bucks. When I received this binder I was amazed at the quality and just the sheer beauty of it. It looks like something you would find sitting in a museum in Sicily. The feel to it is soft leather and the two tone scheme makes it look that much sharper. On the side there is a label holder that you can put any of your own labels in. The metal that surrounds the label is very decorative and rustic. The only complaint i have is there are only 12 pages, each page can hold 4 DVDs or CDs which is 48 all together. This item has the potential for holding a lot of cds or dvds. My concern is that the zipper and the material that the zipper holds together is rather flimsy and I wonder if this will withstand full capacity without ripping or tearing. It doesnt seem like it was built to stand up to much wear and tear (even just basic everyday stuff). I dont have enough cds or dvds at the moment to test out what full capacity would be like but wanted to make sure that I posted my concerns for other potential buyers. no instructions with the cable so i tried installing as is and couldnt really get them to snap into I/O ports between HDTV and 5.1 sound system.

duh! once i noticed the clear rubber protectors on the cable ends and removed them i get 5.1 signals directly from a HDTV channel that broadcasts in Dolby Digital into my 5.1 ONKYO system. WOW!

Dont know much about these, was just told I needed digital optical cables. Read all the reviews about them and bought them with that information in mind. They have worked fine, but have nothing to compare them to. I was just glad not to have to pay for the name Monster that everyone was pushing one us for an exhorbitant amount in comparison. All I can say is they were installed easily and are working fine. We have had no problems.

This cable is a welcome alternative to the higher priced cables at local electronic stores. It has no frills -- it just does the job that needs to be done. Make sure when using this cable that the tiny plastic covers are removed from the connectors -- they are very difficult to see. I first thought the cable wasnt working properly because of them.

Some sites tout the benefit of optical over other choices for multi-channel audio but as far as I tell with the Xbox, there isnt any other choice to worry about. You either need a toslink from the xbox to the receiver (or TV to receiver) or you go with HDMI to the receiver (cheap ones dont support HDMI).

I purchased 5 of these with one of the multiple Toslink switches. They didnt work for me at all. I tried each one seperately and none of them worked with the switch. Even more frustrating, was the fact that only one out of five work at all with my 5.1 surround sound system. Then I thought, maybe the selector switch was bad. But after purchasing name brand 3ft optical cables from one of the superstores, I found that the switch works great. Problem solved. I threw these things in the trash. I paid about 45 times more for the name brand cables. It was more than worth it. DONT EVEN BOTHER!!!

OK, you have been shopping for cables to finish off your new home theater system and time after time a salesperson tells you about MONSTER cables. Well, when it comes to HDMI or Red/Blue/Green component cables, getting something nice with gold fittings is the way to go but spending big bucks to buy the MONSTER brand name is way over rated. Search our some similar but way cheaper cables on Amazon.com. Now regarding these optical cables. Brand means nothing. Transferring a light signal is transferring a light signal. A gold fitting means squat. As long as the optical cable you buy delivers the light signal from a cable box to your TV or audio system, you good to go. Example, I purchased a MONSTER Cable on sale for $38 bucks before I saw this cable on Amazon.com. Glad Circuit City has a 30 return policy with receipt because I sure used it. Once my less then less than a buck optical cable arrived and I saw that it delivered a light signal just like the MONSTER cable with the MONSTER price did, I returned that overpriced cable faster than you can say jack rabbit. When installing your optical cable, look close at the shape of the fitting and the shape of the whole it goes in. Kinda trick to make sure you are placing it in correctly and push it in snug. Do not jam it in without lining up which side is up. Also, do not crimp the cable. You are dealing with fiber optics here so keep the cord from bending at a sharp able to keep your light passageway from getting blocked. ENJOY AND SAVE BIG BUCKS.

This product is so cheap and does the job. This is not as fancy as other expensive optical audio cable and it uses cheaper 1mm plastic optical fiber (instead of higher quality multi strand plastic or quartz glass). But it does the job what it supposed to do. Im not sure you can make out the difference.
I connected PS3 to my home theater using this cable. It works great, the sound quality is clearly noticeable against analog audio cable. Dont get fooled by the low price.

I never understood why one piece of flexible glass cost so much more than another. If they both transmit light and have decent quality connectors attached, why pay more? I had already bought a $24 optical cable from Radioshack and as soon as I read all these reviews I ordered this one. As soon as it came I swapped out the cable with no noticeable difference except the $20 credit to my AMEX for returning that expensive sucka back to Radioshack. Crooks!

I have this cable hooked up to my Samsung LCD and Samsung surround sound system. Works exactly the same as the monster cable that I got from Circuit City for $.... The protective caps on the end are attached which is a nice feature, so you dont loose them.
Recommend this for anyone not wanting to get taken by the chain stores. When I returned the cable to CC, the manager asked me why and I told him "I got the same cable off Amazon for less than ... bucks". All he could was "thats a pretty good price".

Purchased one of these from seller Eforcity for less than five bucks after shipping. Arrived pretty quickly in Washington apparently from California. Was in a sealed generic clear plastic bag. Looks just like the one pictured with the clear plastic end connector tethered to the cable. Hooked it up to my Toshiba 1080p TV and Onkyo 7.1 Receiver and it seems to work fine.

I used this optical switch to connect my DVD player and my laptop audio to the Toslink input for my receiver. The laptop audio came through but the DVD audio did not. I only tested one device at a time. I was able to get the DVD working by replacing my cables with high quality Toslink cables (one 6ft and the other 3ft).

Confirmed, the one from Gadged Dweeb is a switch and splitter. Im using this as an switch to split one input of my Sony home theater into two and it works fine with two xbox. My only regret is with Gadged Dweeb who didnt send me all the items that I ordered and didnt answer my questions by email. At least they refund me for the missing item.

Amazon asked me to write a review of this item, so here goes. The item works as advertised. The transmitted picture is sharp, and in the case of my system it communicates nicely back and forth between the Panasonic TV and sound system to allow Panasonic Viera remote controls to work as it is supposed to. What more can you expect from an HDMI cable? It either works or it doesnt. This one works. Oh yeah, and it was dirt cheap.

This "allowance" rings true for any serious commentator on any political candidate. In fact, wouldnt it be a decent idea for every political candidate to have a "devils advocate" like this one? Successful politics should produce public executives, judges, and lawmakers who are talented, but "regular" people who need to examine the reality of their policies and beliefs.

David Freddosos slant in "Obama" is obvious: he does not want Barack Obama to be President of the United States. Getting past that, the three thoughts he wishes to leave the reader with seem to be: 1) Mr. Obama is not the reformer he claims to be 2) the Chicago political "nursery" which Mr. Obama developed in and from, could be one of the worst and corrupt systems anywhere in the country and 3) the reform claimed by Mr. Obama will turn out to be quite left-liberal. Viewed this way, the critique becomes a reasonable one. Not necessarily true in the long run, but reasonable for the present. There are 11 chapters in this work, each with an expectedly different topic of criticism. That Chicago theme runs through them all, be forewarned.

Consider this interesting experiment: reread the book six years from now. What a checklist this could be, in a minor way for the now-President Obama, but more so for the authors prediction powers!

This is a revealing look at Obamas political career. Though the author admits he has a conservative bent, he is even-handed in his treatment of Obama. He avoids the shrill and emotional fears you hear about Obama while looking at the then-candidates rise to power and his record. I found it especially fascinating to read about Chicago and Obamas dealings in the state legislature. If you want an insight into Obamas political philosophy and a look at the people he surrounds himself with, you should read this book. In a nutshell, Obama is about politics as usual, not about change.

All Americans should read this book and get the real behind the scenes story of Obamas quick (to quick) rise to stardom, I, I, mean Presidency. Whatever your political affiliation everyone should know the history behind this guy and if more people knew the "real" story about this guy, not just what the liberal mainstream media, he wouldnt have even been nominated as the Democratic candidate. The election is over, Obama is in BUT people should still read up on this guy for future reference.

The book, I feel is an accurate portrayal of his almost instant political rise to the top. It clearly shows how he has been given a free pass and is untested and has been almost unquestioned about his political views and agendas. I did feel like the author on occasion was reaching a bit to prove Obamas ties and the severity of some of them. The chapter on Rezko I felt was a far reach even though it was politically wrong what Obama did for Rezko in exchange for favors it is however the way politics work in general, "You scratch my back Ill scratch yours."

Clearly in this book you can see Obama isnt an agent of "change" as he portrays himself to be on the campaign trail. He is the polar opposite of political change. He is a product of one of the most corrupt political climates in this country. He is and always will be politics at its worst. Its what defines him. He is a masterful politician (not a good thing) and will say or do whatever he has to at any given time and will totally change course in the blink of an eye to further his expansion of power, fortune, and fame. This book proves it and I think it is a very accurate history of our new elected President. It also shows that he is just the messenger for a vast array of other political figures and their dangerous hidden agendas. Be afraid.........be very afraid of this guy and his associates. Bush doesnt have anything on this guy and what he will be pushed to do (change). Change is definately coming but change for the sake of change isnt a good thing.

Im disappointed he won the election for several reasons: (1)Americans have not only been misguided by the vast majority of mainstream news outlets BUT the info has been available and most Obama supporters chose not to believe it or at least research its validity as I have done. They chose him because he speaks well or gives hope, even though its based on falsehoods and fantasy world ideologies and are void of common-sense and practicality. Everyone needs hope or for lack of a better word(s) a peep talk on occasion but it needs to be "real." (2)Is Obama and McCain the best this country has to offer as Presidential candidates?????? McCain would have been only a handful of policies better than Obama but lower taxes for all and Natl security are key differences that may end up bitting the "hope and changers" in the butt and we ALL will suffer. I didnt vote for McCain I voted against Obama. (3)Obama and his wife are IMO racists. They agreed with Wright and Phlagers ideologies and attended a church that is clearly racially discriminatory towards any other race but their own. One need to only look at their church charter to see it clearly. Read up on the fundamentals of "black theology." Americans didnt seem to mind this but if it were McCain with the same hard-core ties to "white theology" he would not even have a Senate job. Clearly a double-standard that is racist in substance is OK as long as it is the black race doing the discrimination........After all Obama has clearly made numerous racial comments pertaining to whites in his two books but I guess, as usual, he gets a free pass..............

Unlike Perry Mason, James Burke does not try to assemble watertight (if convoluted) cases. His essays in the history of technology are more like random walks, paeans to serendipity. In The Knowledge Web Burke attempted to duplicate on paper the feeling of inter- and cross-linking trends that you find in history and on the World Wide Web. The essays in Circles are more artificially restricted, topological circles that wrap around. A typical trip goes from the Space Shuttle to Skylab to Werner von Braun to feedback to digestion to lab animals to the Humane Society to sea rescues to charting sea currents to Foucault to astronomical photography to the solar corona to Skylab. Whew!

"There are two reasons why I make such play of the unstructured nature of history, but then, in this book, give it a formal shape," Burke says. "One reason is that otherwise these essays would have mirrored the serendipity I described, just going from anywhere to anywhere.... After producing the marvelous and engaging series "Connections", Burke seems to have gone to the well one to many times with "Circles". Burke trys to take his Connections approach to identify complete circles in the connections of history. But rather than taking the connections where they lead, this self-imposed, artificial constraint leads to a combination of wild leaps and tidy little packages that just doesnt ring true. Burke comes out looking like hes just trying too hard, and a reader whos really paying attention will just refuse to follow.

Okay, there are some curious and interesting historical connections identified here, but its just too hard to follow Burkes route just to glean a few gems.

Technology,Science,History,Culture,Personal Relationships and a few other thingsbut in the end they all end up where the trip started.
The trips in this book are reminiscent of the trips Burke used to take us on in his TV series Connections. I enjoyed the trips on Connections much more than the trips in this this book for a number of reasons. Since the connections that are detailed are interesting asides which are quite surprising and entertaining but not particularly earth shattering.These trips are little else than entertainingand as such they are far better presented with video than simply by prose.

James Burkes works are always engaging, stimulating, exhilarating, fascinating and awe-inspiring. Genius, it is often said, is evidenced not by what the genius knows, but by the connections the genius sees. Burke is by any reasonable definition therefore a certifiable genius.

"Circles," unlike earlier works "Connections" or "The Day the Universe Changed," has no illustrations and touches on the myriad of intersecting lives in history in only the briefest mention. This is "Connections" on steroids or "The Day the Universe Changed" for the ADD set. Burkes breakneck pace in racing through history makes you wish for more detail, more context, more elaboration -- which of course is a good nudge in the proper direction. Reading his clever essays is pleasurable on several levels, but the panoply of characters whisks by so fast youre left with not much but intellectual whiplash at the end.

This is an ingenious ways of writing a book but it borders more on a way of storing information. It is not the type of book that you read from cover to cover although you could that if you wanted to. It is essentially cross-referenced with itself. What is does is talk about a particular advancement or invention, providing page numbers in the margins for other advancements or inventions that that one enabled. You can bounce all through the book this way - hence the name of the book. It is very interesting but there is a certain amount of information overload. I kept wondering How does he know all of this stuff?.

Even if you are not a history buff nor care anything for science, I would still recommend this book to you. Whenever I feel my mind getting dull, I pick up this book, sit down for a few hours, and read right on through. This book, for me (and I bet it would for you), really helps me to see connections in the world around me -- at work, home, etc. And, that helps me to be sharp of mind and bring together resources and diverse elements to the benefit of my job, life, and for the benefit of others. This book is a fun exercise in thought as well as a fun jaunt through history.

Burkes "Connections" is an excellent reference source. It aroused a passion within the reader to progress further with this fascinating subject, of how significant events were connected, and how technology devolped from them.
The Pinball Effect is a good example of an author, that like Clive Custler, should have stopped writing while they were ahead.

Readers or viewers familiar with James Burkes work in CONNECTIONS or THE DAY THE UNIVERSE CHANGED know the delight he takes in tracing the pathways of invention and change. THE PINBALL EFFECT is more material in the same vein with a new twist. This volume is a hyper-book. It can be read front to back like any other text, or in any of four hundred and fourty-seven (?) other directions by following links annotated in the margins. That means you can burrow through the book popping up for air in chapters three, seven and twenty and then back to one again, read sequentially for a while and then dive once more. Amazingly, it works, and illustrates the meta-message lurking in Burkes work. (Sorry, couldnt help myself.) Everything is connected, and by much shorter links than most of us imagine. Five star brain candy.

Dont miss this series! Absolutely fabulous overview of world history, mechanics, medicine, technology, everything. He explains how we got to where we are (or rather, were the series is over 10 years old and lots has changed even since then). So interesting, so much to learn, so much "I didnt know that!" and "Wow, what a great.... CONNECTION!"

I remember getting into George Clintons solo joints, and being told right away that his work with Funkadelic / Parliament is better. After checking them out, I can indeed say that claim is true. I still dig his solo work though, for it does have its moments.

If I were to choose a favorite Parliament album, this would most likely be it, though Up For The Down Stroke comes close. From start to finsh this album is solid, and never gets dry. One thing I really love about this album (and every other album by this artist) is that so many people can get into it. I work with a wide range of different people and were always arguing about which music to put in. Once I introduced them to this, they never argue when I suggest it. Honestly, who can resist the ultra funkalicious melodies of the great P Funk? I cant say Ive ever met anyone who can. The song structures arent too complex, and the lyrics (which are mostly Georges dialoque, and group choruss) arent necessarily poetic, but when combined they equal something so magical, unique and innovative. Not only did they revolutionize Funk, they created many commonly used phrases used in modern day speech (tear the roof of the mutha sucka) (the bomb) (put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip) those ALL came from this. Perhaps its biggest inlfuence is the Hip Hop/Rap world. The first time I listened to this, I couldnt believe how many producers have sampled this. Espeicially Dr. Dre on his 92 classic album - The Chronic. But you cant blame them for wanting to add a little Mothership Connection to their own music.

If youve never taken a ride on the mothership, you owe it to yourself to hop on. I must warn you though ... you will come back for another expedition.

I have seen The ParliamentFunkadelic Thang about 15 times. This is classic funk at its best. You have to understand the thinking that Brother George was puttin down back in 76. I see by some of the reviews that we have a couple of Sir Noses friends. They had the %#% nerve to only give up one star, and that does not mean staying on the "one". If you do not already own this piece of Parliament history then search no further. Peace and Hair Grease

George hit the the nail on the head, or hit the groove in the right place is more like it. By the time of Mothership Connection George Clinton had perfected what he took from Sly and James and created something so strange and something so original, too original in fact that it should not have worked. Oh boy did it work though. Mothership Connection remains the groups biggest and most popular album even more so than Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome, and Funkadellic One Nation Under a Groove.

So heres the deal. Its a concept album. Not the strongest concept mind you but being the genius Clinton is he makes it work, and work wonderfully. Funk from outer space is here (star child) and it is going to retrieve the funk from the pyramids. Sounds crazy? Well just wait till you actually here the music...

P-Funk opens the killer album with a George playing a radio dj as he was known to do. He never did it better then here. The subtle guitar lines make for and atmosphere that more then compliments the driving bass line from Bootsy and the vocals from the Brides. Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication (The Bumps Bump) is well....hilarious. One of the funkiest tunes in all of the kingdom of funkdom! This is truly Georges song and he completely kills it. Gangsta Rap would have been nothing with out this one thats for sure. Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker) went on to become the groups biggest single, even better then the superior Flashlight. Though it has been sampled more times then one would care to count it is the true original that dominates. Bootsys licks and the group vocals make for one of the most memorable tunes in all of funk history. To go track by track and list why each track is a highlight would run trite and tedious, besides these three tracks are worth the cash flow anyways.

Mothership is the perfect place to start a funk or Parliament collection. While I myself am more of a Funkadellic man myself, you cant have one with out the other. It would be like having the Kool with out the aid. Essential.

Great melodies, great piano, tight band, good lyrics. If "Burn Down the Mission" was two minutes shorter this would be a five star album. This was his most cohesive album what followed was an unbelievable outpouring of hit singles.

Elton John has had MANY classic albums over the years, and thats why people remember him as the top 5 musicians of the 70s. The early days were really good too.

While the western/country pop rock style of Elton John is one of the main things people note about Tumbleweed Connection, it should also be noted that despite sounding different from the pop rock commercial phase of Elton Johns career (starting with the "Dont Shoot Me Im Only the Piano Player" album) his typical style of piano pop on Tumbleweed Connection isnt really any different from any other song youve heard by Elton John. It just sounds different with the western influences. The songs are still written the same way as usual.

So basically what Im trying to say is even though the album has a western vibe, it still falls in the same category of singer-songwriter and the songs really arent constructed any differently from that of say "Dont Let the Sun Go Down on Me".

However, the quality of the music is REALLY high, and that makes the album a classic.

George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins and the rest of the P-Funk collective were riding the success of their first Top 5 R&B hit, "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)," a track that had earned them the kind of radio play that would bring the masses out to see them live in a stadium-sized arena. The group was only five dates into the tour when they arrived in Houston, but they were definitely ready to take it to the stage for an out-of-this-world show like no other.
